For those of you who don’t know, House of M was a storyline from a few years back that featured the Scarlet Witch sending many of the heroes from the Marvel universe into an alternate reality. The Hulk from the House of M was produced in 2006 as part of an insanely cool box set that also featured sick House of M versions of Iron Man, It and Inhuman Torch. It’s tempting to want to talk about all the toys in this set but this review is about the angry green man we’ve grown to love.
First things first, this is not your parent’s Hulk. This is an even madder and more muscular version of the infamous Marvel character. This shift in character captures the essence of the alternate reality he lives in.
There are many great features to admire about this production. The most striking element to the House of M Hulk has to be the definition and detail. So much love went into the sculpting of this toy that it feels special in your hands. Each curvature and muscle bulge looks and feels like a miniature of the same thing. And the detail on the face, in particular, resonates with true collectors and fans of the original character. The tortured skull-like face and head cry out visually, so much so that you can almost hear the Hulk screaming. His jaw line and furrowed brow take on an almost alien life form in this alternate version.
The paint and color is almost perfect. The only complaint I have is that there seems to be a slightly different paint for the body and limbs, but this is a minor detail. More concerning, however, is the paint’s tendency to chip slightly as you move articulation points, particularly the shoulders. It seems that the articulation is maybe too well evolved for the paint, which is a shame.
This is because there are 38 points of articulation on this Hulk, including an awesome torso that not only moves Hulk into various poses but also possesses a spring mechanism that allows you to snap him into action. This is not a toy to be over handled, however. Between the paint and all the articulation points it’s probably best to strike him into a pose and keep him there.
The feet in particular also have great movement. It’s a brilliant call by the designers as you realize with this toy how much Hulk’s huge protruding bare feet are a big aspect of his allure. But no detail is overlooked in this edition. Even the ripped stitching on his pants is lovingly sculpted in the House of M.
This toy is well crafted, fun and Hulk is my favorite of the bunch.
